Moving Out of a Dubai Apartment: What to Sort Out Before Moving Day
Most people in Dubai live in apartments, and moving between towers is a different job from moving a villa. The lift, the parking, the paperwork and the crew all have to line up on one day. This guide covers what to arrange in advance so the move stays calm, even on the 30th floor.
Why Your Building’s Rules Come Before the Truck
Rules for moving differ from one building and community to another. Your building management or community office is the only reliable source, so ask them directly rather than relying on what a friend did in a different tower. An experienced apartment movers in Dubai will ask about these rules on the first call. If a company never mentions your building, expect surprises on the day.
Move-Out Approvals: What to Ask Your Current Building
Start with the building you are leaving. Ask:
- Do you need a move-out permit or clearance, and who issues it?
- Is the service lift bookable, and is there a fee or a refundable deposit?
- Which days and hours are allowed for moving? Some buildings restrict weekends or evenings.
- Does management need to inspect the unit, or confirm that service charges and dues are cleared?
Get the answers in writing, even if it is just a message from the property manager.
Move-In Approvals: What to Arrange at Your New Building
Do not assume the new building works like the old one. Some towers ask for a copy of the tenancy contract or ID before issuing a move-in permit, and some charge a deposit. Ask about lift booking, where the truck can park, and whether the security desk needs the move details beforehand. A booking at one building does not cover the other, so confirm both.
Matching the Crew and Vehicle to Your Apartment
A studio in Discovery Gardens needs a very different setup from a three-bedroom on Palm Jumeirah. If the crew is too small, the day drags on. If the vehicle is too big, you pay for space you never use.
Describe the move honestly: number of rooms, floor, whether the lift works, and any awkward items such as a king bed, a large fridge or a piano. A short video walkthrough sent by WhatsApp usually gives a more accurate quote than a phone description.
What Good Packing Looks Like
When you compare movers and packers Dubai, the difference shows in how things are packed, not in the logo on the truck. Look for:
- Wardrobe boxes for hanging clothes
- Bubble wrap and corrugated sheets for glass, mirrors and TVs
- Furniture dismantled with screws bagged and labelled
- Protection for floors, doorframes and lift walls
Also ask who does the packing. Trained staff handle fragile items very differently from workers hired for the day.
Getting a Quote You Can Trust
Many disputes start with a quote that was never fully explained. Ask these before you agree:
- Is the price fixed, or charged by the hour? If hourly, what is the minimum and how is travel time counted?
- What does it include: labour, vehicle, fuel, packing materials, dismantling and reassembly?
- What could add to the bill? Common examples are a long carry between the lift and the truck, waiting time if the lift is not ready, stairs when no lift is available, and heavy items.
- When is payment due: before, on the day, or after delivery?
Ask for the quote in writing, by email or message, so the numbers can be checked later.
Moving Insurance: What Is Actually Covered
“Insured” can mean very different things. Ask whether goods-in-transit cover is included or optional, what the maximum amount is, and whether it covers damage during loading and unloading as well as on the road. Ask which items are excluded, since cash, jewellery and documents are often left out. Also ask how to make a claim and how soon you must report damage. Take photos of valuable furniture and electronics before they are wrapped. They make any claim far easier.
The Final Week Checklist
- Arrange the transfer or closure of your electricity, water, cooling, internet and gas accounts, and keep the final bills.
- Photograph the empty apartment once it is cleared, in case your deposit is discussed.
- Keep passports, documents, jewellery and chargers with you, not on the truck.
- Label boxes by room, with “fragile” on the sides as well as the top.
- Empty and defrost the fridge the day before so it does not leak in transit.
Moves also tend to bunch up at the end of the month and before the school year. If your dates are flexible, a midweek slot in the middle of the month is usually easier to book. Book at least a week ahead, and earlier in busy periods.
Checking Everything When the Truck Arrives
The job is not finished when the truck pulls up. While the crew is still there, check that furniture has been reassembled, boxes are in the right rooms, and nothing is scratched or broken. Problems raised on the spot are much easier to resolve than ones raised days later.
